If you ask anyone if they would like straighter teeth, most would say, “Yes, please!” Everyone wants the confidence that a bright smile brings, but we understand that some may have reservations about getting braces. Most teens don’t want to be different, have to watch what they eat, or worry about how they look. Never fear! There are now more orthodontic treatment options available than ever, and now is a great time to consider Invisalign Teen.

People Don’t Notice What’s Invisible.

Invisalign Teen clear aligners are virtually invisible. Gone are the days of smiling with a mouth full of metal if that is a concern. Most likely, the only people who will know are your friends and family, or whomever you choose to tell.

Maintain Your Food Freedom.

Since the aligners are removable, so you may eat as you normally would. You don’t necessarily have to avoid crunchy or chewy foods because you don’t have to worry about food getting stuck between your braces or a bracket coming loose or popping off. You can have food freedom with Invisalign Teen! Unlike with traditional braces, you may still enjoy:

  • Popcorn
  • Trail mix with crunchy nuts and dried fruit
  • Chicken wings and ribs

How to Keep Your New Invisalign® Smile!

How to Keep Your New Invisalign® Smile!

You’ve worked really hard to achieve your ideal smile! You followed doctor’s orders, worn your Invisalign clear aligners as instructed, cared for your teeth, and now you have a megawatt smile. Congratulations on this achievement! However, to keep your smile in tip-top shape, keep these things in mind when continuing your new and improved oral care routine.

When your orthodontist determines that you have completed your Invisalign treatment, you aren’t done. Many patients will require a retainer after Invisalign treatment, and this is the time your orthodontist will determine that. They will take new impressions of your teeth, and have new retainers made. In the grand scheme, you’ve spent a small window of time in those clear aligners, and you’re over the most intense part. Everyone’s situation is unique, so follow your doctor’s guidelines and use your retainer as directed. During this time, you should still avoid hard or crunchy foods as your teeth adjust.

It’s important to know why wearing your retainers is necessary. If you’re a teen, your bones are still “soft,” and that goes for the upper and lower jaws. Retainers will prevent the natural tendency for teeth to migrate back to their original positions. If you don’t wear your retainers as directed by your orthodontist, you will see this happen within weeks of completing your Invisalign treatment. Remember, the same physiological properties that allow your teeth to move during orthodontic treatment are always at work. You don’t want to undo all that hard work!

Brushing and Flossing

As you already know, brushing and flossing must be part of your daily oral care. And by this time, you’re a pro! Flossing prevents plague from building up and becoming tartar or calculus. This can eventually cause gingivitis and gum disease, so stay on course. Your gums may be sensitive for up to two weeks after your orthodontic treatment is completed. A warm salt-water rinse will help.

Your teeth sensitivity will last only a short time. Keep in mind that they have been protected by your Invisalign aligner trays, and are now fully exposed. Ask our orthodontist about using a toothpaste specifically for tooth sensitivity during this time. Also, if your teeth are stained in any way, ask about whitening treatments to consider.

Regular Dental Checkups

With your new smile, you will be more motivated than ever to keep it healthy! You still need to see your dentist regularly. Cleanings and X-rays will ensure your teeth and gums remain healthy so you can keep that bright smile for life. When cavities happen, and they do happen, they can be taken care of quickly.

Is Invisalign® Right for You?

Is Invisalign® Right for You?

You know what they say. Image is everything. The thought of metal brackets and wires attached to your teeth for an extended period of time may be more than enough to make you think twice about pursuing orthodontic treatment. But now we have options that quell those apprehensions. Invisalign clear aligners are a great option to achieve the smile you have always wanted!

We have the experience with Invisalign technology to reach your goal of having a stunning smile. And because Invisalign is so convenient, it won’t interfere with daily activities.

  • Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible, while extremely effective at moving teeth to their optimal positions.
  • Because the aligners are easily removable, you do not have to change your eating habits during treatment.
  • The aligners are low-maintenance, made of comfortable, smooth plastic.
  • Oral hygiene is much easier with Invisalign than with traditional metal braces, reducing the risk of potential problems.
  • Most insurance providers include Invisalign treatment, just like traditional braces.

Not only do correctly-aligned teeth give you a beautiful smile, but also helps the rest of your mouth to stay healthy. An improper bite can create health issues, which are decreased when teeth are straight. Speech and/or chewing difficulty, jaw ailments, gum disease, and tooth enamel wear are all maladies that crooked teeth can exacerbate.

If the time constraint of seeing an orthodontist is a concern, most of the appointments are quick and easy with tracking the process of the aligners. If the trays are tracking well, the appointments may only take about 5 minutes to monitor the progress and give the patient more aligners. Patients change the Invisalign aligners at two-week intervals at home, and usually see the doctor for progress checks at every 6-8 weeks. These are typical time frames, but keep in mind each patient is different. And no more worries about emergency visits for broken brackets or poking wires!

Invisalign clear aligners may be a superb option if you have been considering straightening your teeth, but are apprehensive about traditional metal braces getting in the way of daily life. Have questions about Invisalign? Want to know if you are a candidate for Invisalign treatment? Give us a call today to schedule your first appointment. With technological advances and more options than ever, we are here to help you attain your perfect smile!

Here are some tips that you can follow to make your Invisalign treatment as successful as possible.

Keep Your Aligners in Your Mouth!

The length of treatment varies case by case, but in order to stay on track with the treatment length that Dr. Whitehead predicted, the aligners must be worn a minimum of 22 hours a day!  This is the biggest factor in how successful your treatment is going to be and how gorgeous your smile will turn out at the end of your orthodontic treatment.

Keep Your Teeth and Aligners Clean!

Similar to traditional braces, excellent oral hygiene is very important during treatment with Invisalign.  Proper brushing and flossing will ensure your teeth and gums stay as healthy as possible when they are moving, but with Invisalign you must remember to brush and rinse your aligners as well.  Healthy teeth and gums ensure that your smile comes out as beautiful as possible.

Wear your rubber bands!

Many people think traditional rubber bands are worn with braces only, but that is not true.  Dr. Whitehead will often have Invisalign patients wear rubber bands as well to achieve the desired bite correction.  Wearing the rubber bands as Dr. Whitehead recommends will ensure your bite fits in a healthy was as your teeth are straightening out.

Tips For People With Braces

Whether you are wearing the Invisalign trays or traditional metal braces, good oral health is an essential part of living with braces.  By taking proper care of your braces you will be able to avoid complications while they are on and the end results will be amazing.  At the end of the day, the key factor is to walk away with a beautiful smile, so think of these braces as an investment rather that a pain in the neck.. As you embark on the all-important quest for the perfect smile, there are a few things that you will need to keep in mind.   In order to make this transition smoother here are some tips.

Always carry a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss handy.    Whether you are wearing the Invisalign trays or traditional metal braces, you will need to brush your teeth after every meal.  It is vital to brush/floss after every meal in order to remove any food debris from the wires, which will help you avoid plaque build up and discoloration.  We recommend carrying a travel size brush and toothpaste that can be easily transported in a pocket or purse.

Always carry a container of dental wax with you. This is especially important for those wearing traditional metal braces as the wire can often leave your mouth sore and calloused.  Having some handy dental wax on hand is the perfect solution to ease the irritation, especially after a recent tightening.

If applicable, always keep a spare set of rubber bands to replace when the old ones break through out the day.

Always keep lip balm on hand as well.  It is not uncommon for your lips to become dry, especially after an alignment, so it is vital to keep some reliable lip balm to keep those lips hydrated.

Bottom line, the better you take care of your braces the quicker you will achieve that picture perfect smile.

What you need to know about Invisalign

What you need to know about Invisalign

The main reason that most people seek orthodontic treatment, and one of the most important benefits that treatment provides, is improving the appearance of a person’s smile!  However, a healthy, well-fitting bite is a huge benefit that orthodontics treatment with braces or Invisalign provides and critical in maintaining healthy teeth and gums for life.  At Whithehead Orthodontics, we understand the importance that a healthy bite and beautiful smile can have in one’s life and make it our mission to offer our patients the latest and most state-of-the-art orthodontic treatments available anywhere in the world right here in Lexington, SC.  Orthodontic treatment with Invisalign is an alternative treatment option to traditional braces and available to many patients seeking a more beautiful smile.  Invisalign provides a convenient and comfortable way to achieve a beautiful orthodontic result and in many cases can even be completed in less time than traditional braces.

Ideal for both teenagers and adults, Invisalign and Invisalign Teen offer patients the opportunity to correct their smile without anyone even noticing that you are wearing anything on the teeth at all.   Aside from the cosmetic benefits Invisalign offers, there are many other perks to consider.

  • Easy home care- Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign trays are removable so the aligners can be removed during meals and also allows patients to take the aligners out of the mouth while brushing and flossing the teeth making it much easier to maintain excellent oral hygiene through orthodontic treatment process.  Simply remove the Invisalign trays, brush and floss teeth as normal, brush and rinse the trays, and then put them back in the mouth to continue the tooth movement. It’s that easy!
  • Enhanced self-confidence- One of the most obvious advantages Invisalign provides over traditional braces is that the aligners are virtually invisible!  The fact that no one notices that Invisalign patients are wearing anything on the teeth thus makes this treatment option a favorite of our adult patients seeking that gorgeous smile.
  • Reduced number of appointments- Invisalign treatment involves a series of aligners, each aligner moving the teeth closer to the desired position and final result. Invisalign patients change their aligners every two weeks but usually only have to come to the office for appointments every 8-12 weeks.  This eliminates the stress of having to leave work for their orthodontic appointments and is another reason why our busy adults love this treatment option!

The benefits of Invisalign treatment are numerous, however, there are some disadvantages you must be aware of as well.

  • Removability- While this feature is usually is considered a benefit this can work to your advantage or disadvantage.  Dr. Jim Whitehead recommends all Invisalign patients to wear the trays for the majority of the day (minimum of 22 hours), except for eating and brushing.  Because it is easy to remove the trays, patients may be tempted to wear them less than is required, which slows the progress and makes a perfect result less predictable. Though this is a disadvantage, it can be easily avoided provided the patient follows Dr. Thurman’s simple instructions of full time wear so they finish treatment with the smile of their dreams!
